Accommodation Allowance From NSFAS 2025

NSFAS disburses funds to cover the cost of accommodation for TVET Colleges and university beneficiaries who stay on and off campus. The following amounts are given out;

UNIVERSITY Beneficiaries

  1. Accommodation: As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  2. Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500  per annum

TVET Beneficiaries

  1. Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
  2. Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
  3. Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum

NOTE: Students who are granted the accommodation allowance should manage the funds carefully to pay for their accommodations after it has been approved. Notifying NSFAS of any changes to the living arrangement—such as relocating to another residence or neighbourhood—should happen as soon as possible. 

Eligibility Criteria For NSFAS Accommodation Allowance 2025

To be eligible for the accommodation allowance provided by NSFAS, students must fulfil specific prerequisites. These requirements consist of the following:

  • South African Citizenship or Permanent Residency
  • SASSA grant recipients
  • Applicants whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
  • 
Persons with disabilities whose combined gross household income is not more than R600 000 per year.

Documents Required To Apply For NSFAS Fund For Accommodation

To apply for NSFAS for the 2025-2026 academic year, the following documents are required;

Students with disabilities must provide:

  • A completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form

Students recognised as vulnerable children must provide:

An applicant who is recognised as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide and Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker

  • Death certificate/s
  • Divorce Decree
  • Proof of legal guardianship
