Eligibility Criteria For NSFAS Allowance 2025

UNISA students must fulfil various requirements to be eligible for NSFAS allowances, such as:

  • South African citizens or permanent residents
  • SASSA grant recipients
  • Applicants whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
  • 
Persons with disabilities whose combined gross household income is not more than R600 000 per year.
  • Must have an email account and cell phone number.

Who Can’t Apply For The NSFAS Unisa In 2025

Your NSFAS application won’t be taken into consideration if you;

  • received NSFAS funding in 2024
  • have already completed an undergraduate degree or diploma.
  • are not South African citizens.
  • need funding for a Short Learning Certificate or Programme or a postgraduate qualification.

Students who have completed a higher certificate and will be starting a degree/diploma qualification in 2025 must re-apply for NSFAS funding.

NSFAS Allowances for UNISA Students 2025

NSFAS provides various allowances to support UNISA students throughout their academic journey. NSFAS pays R700 per module for the first 4 modules, R5460 for 5 or more modules per academic year and Students registered for 10 or more modules qualify for an incidental allowance of R304.50 per month for 10 months. A breakdown of NSFAS Allowances for 2025 is provided below;

  • Accommodation: As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
  • Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences.

Process For UNISA NSFAS Applications

The actions below must be taken by UNISA students who wish to apply for NSFAS allowances:

  • Create a profile:

Create a myNSFAS account via this link: https://my.nsfas.org.za/ or download the NSFAS App on Google Play or App Store. Your ID number will be your username.

  • Apply now:

Click on the “Apply’ tab to update your personal information and upload your application supporting documents, as indicated.

  • Complete:

Submit your application.

Required Documents To Apply For NSFAS Unisa 2025

Below are essential supporting documents required for the 2025 application are listed below:

Students with disabilities must provide:

  • A completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form

Students recognised as vulnerable children must provide:

  •  An applicant who is recognised as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide and Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker

Other documents that may be required, if applicable:

  • Retrenchment letter
  •  Death certificate/s
  • Divorce Decree
  • Proof of legal guardianship
  • Marriage certificate
  • other documents may be required for appeal purposes,….eg retrenchment letter
