The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation, Prof Blade Nzimande, and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) Board Chairperson Mr Ernest Khosa, have now released the opening date of the NSFAS Funding Applications for the 2025 academic year and the overall readiness of the Scheme. the date of this bursary program and many other details to look at have been explained below.

Below is the NSFAS Application dates for the 2025 academic season:

• Opening date: 21st November 2024
• Closing date: 31st January 2025

All students who wish to study in any of the public universities and TVET Colleges to apply as soon as possible and not wait until the deadline. Students must not wait for their matric results to apply for NSFAS 2025.

There is an update on the enhancements made to the NSFAS funding application portal. We will walk you through the online application process, the required supporting documents and the new features that will enable all applicants to apply smoothly.

How to Submit New NSFAS Application Form 2025/2026

Welcome to NSFAS 2025 Applications: There is a mobile app that is designed to make your NSFAS funding application process easy and seamless.

1. Visit the NSFAS application portal at www.nsfas.org.za
2. Click on myNSFAS tab at the top menu of the page
3. Create a myNSFAS account via https://my.nsfas.org.za/
4. Click on the “Apply” tab to update your personal information
5. Upload your NSFAS application supporting documents
6. Complete and submit your application for evaluation

Apply for NSFAS 2025 via the Application Mobile App

1. Go to the Google Play Store or Apple Store
2. Download the NSFAS Mobile App
3. Create a myNSFAS account profile
4. Login with your ID number and password
5. Click on the “Apply” tab to update your details
6. Upload your application supporting documents as indicated
7. Complete and submit your application for review

Who Qualifies for 2025 NSFAS funding?

All South African citizens who planning to study in 2024 or if you are already studying at a public university or TVET college and you meet the following requirements:

1. SASSA grant recipients
2. South African citizens or permanent residents
3. You must have an email account and cell phone number.
4. Applicants whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
5. Persons with disabilities whose combined gross household income is not more than R600 000 per year.

What Does the 2025 NSFAS Bursary Cover?

NSFAS bursary covers the cost of the following:

1. Accommodation
2. Living allowance
3. Learning material allowance
4. Personal care allowance

Those studying at the University of South Africa (UNISA) will receive funding for the following:

1. Tuition
2. Personal care allowance
3. Books (subject to the number of modules registered)

Eligible students with disability will receive funding for the following:

1. Meals
2. Tuition
3. Transport
4. Human Support
5. Accommodation
6. Assistive Devices

Needed Supporting Documents for the 2025 NSFAS Application Process

1. A completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form
2. Applicants recognised as vulnerable children by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker

Other required documents if applicable are:

1. Retrenchment letter
2. Death certificate/s
3. Divorce Decree
4. Proof of legal guardianship
5. Marriage certificate

Other documents may be required for appeal purposes (eg, retrenchment letter)

General NSFAS 2025 Application Conditions

1. All SASSA recipients do not have to provide proof of income. If you have registered at an institution and are academically eligible, you will be funded
2. If you are a student with permanent residence, you are required to submit your parent’s or guardian’s passport
3. All applicants are required to provide correct supporting documents, including parental information during the NSFAS 2024 application process
