Who Qualifies to Apply for National Student Financial Aid Scheme 2025-2026

To apply for NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme), you must meet the following criteria:

  • South African citizens or permanent residents
  • SASSA grant recipients
  • Applicants whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
  • Persons with disabilities whose combined gross household income is not more than R600 000 per year.

What Does NSFAS Allowance Cover 2025?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, NSFAS Funding bursary for 2024-2025 covers the cost of tuition, and some additional expenses related to your studies, which include:

  • Accommodation: NSFAS covers the cost of on-campus or off-campus student housing.
  • Textbooks and study materials: NSFAS can provide you with a study allowance to purchase the required textbooks and materials for your course.
  • Meals: The NSFAS provides a meal allowance to help cover the cost of food while you are studying.

Breakdown of National Student Financial Aid Scheme Allowances for 2025-2026

UNIVERSITY

  • Accommodation
As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution): R7 500  per annum
  • Living allowance: R15, 000  per annum
  • Book allowances: R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance: R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET

  • Accommodation in an urban area: R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area: R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area: R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution): R7,350  per annum
  • Transport :R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance: R2900 per annum

NSFAS Application Opening Date 2025/2026

From now until January 31, 2025, the NSFAS Online Application Portal is open for the academic year 2025-2026. The program remains dedicated to assisting students in completing their degrees. It’s important to remember that eligibility requirements and application deadlines may apply to applicants.

Applicants should apply as soon as possible, as NSFAS may not accept late applications for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Required Documents To Apply for National Student Financial Aid Scheme 2025/2026

Below are the needed supporting documents for your NSFAS online application for 2025:

Students with disabilities must provide:

  • A completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form

Students recognised as vulnerable children must provide:

  • An applicant who is recognised as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide and Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker

Other documents that may be required, if applicable:

  • Retrenchment letter
  • Death certificate/s
  • Divorce Decree
  • Proof of legal guardianship
  • Marriage certificate

To Check your NSFAS Application Status for 2025, you need to follow the steps below:

  1. Visit the NSFAS status portal at www.nsfas.org.za
  2. Click on the myNSFAS tab on the NSFAS homepage
  3. Login to myNSFAS account with your username & password
  4. Click on the sign-in button on the screen
  5. Then you click on “Track Funding Progress” to check NSFAS Status 2025
